How to Choose the Right Replacement Ceiling Exhaust Fan

Updated: Mar 15

An old bathroom exhaust fan that has become noisy
An old bathroom exhaust fan that has become noisy, inefficient, or no longer ventilates properly is a common reason homeowners decide to replace their fan.

If you want to replace your old ceiling fan—because it’s noisy, no longer working properly, or not providing enough ventilation—follow these steps to make sure you purchase the right replacement ceiling exhaust fan.

  1. Remove the fan grille and cover. Gently pull down the grille to expose the fan housing.

  2. Measure the inside of the fan housing or ceiling opening. Measure the inner width and length of the holes where the fan sits.

After removing the fan grille, measure the inside opening of the ceiling housing. The new fan’s housing box should match these dimensions so it fits without cutting the ceiling.
  3. Choose a replacement fan with a housing that matches those measurements. The mounting box of the new fan should fit the existing opening.

  4. If you cannot find an exact match, choose a slightly larger unit. In that case, a small portion of the drywall may need to be trimmed to fit the new housing.

  5. Purchase the new fan once you confirm the housing size is compatible.

  6. Installation time:

    • If the new fan fits the existing opening, installation typically takes 1–2 hours.

    • If the ceiling opening needs to be enlarged, add about 30–60 minutes.
